When you produce heavy equipment for construction, mining, forestry, and military applications, and are the number two construction company in the world, there’s a lot riding on your equipment being at the right place at the right time. Not just any freight brokerage can handle your load, you need one specialized in over-dimensional freight.
This client doesn’t just need to move the occasional over-dimensional load. They constantly need to move vastly different over-dimensional loads on very strict and specific timelines, often times from overseas.
Typically, the loads from this client are large enough that before they can even leave their origin, they must be broken down into more appropriate transportation sizes—though even once broken down they are still over-dimensional. Then, each load needs to ship in a specific order so that the full piece of equipment can be put back together as each truck delivers a new piece—you don’t want three pieces sitting on site while waiting for a different part to arrive and you don’t want all the parts to arrive at once and congest the site.
These are the challenges this client presented us with, and that’s all before the topic of permitting and route planning for the over-dimensional loads is taken into account.
Even though our niche is over-dimensional freight, this client needed more than the usual wide-load basics. They’re experts in taking apart and rebuilding their equipment but they needed experts in transportation configurations.
So we took a more hands-on approach.
We became not just their broker, but also their consultant. One of our experts is often on-site, giving real time feedback and advice on the most cost-effective way to break down and configure the equipment for transportation while still being efficient for the rebuilding process.
Once the breakdown takes place, we can order permits and plan routes, and then start scheduling out the arrivals.
They say it takes two to tango and it definitely takes two to transport some of the largest equipment and machinery in the construction industry. Our goal is to always take as much of the logistics out of your hands as possible, but we’ll never do that at the expense of your budget or your product. If being hands-on or having someone on-site abroad is what guarantees success for shipments, we don’t hesitate.
This customer keeps coming back because we didn’t make them change their processes; we adapted to theirs. The more we move, the more we learn, and working smart and efficiently on every load has led to this client giving us more opportunities
